The Human Body Systems

The organism of a human contains many systems working together to keep it alive.

A system is a group of specialised organs working together; an organ is a group of specialised tissues; a tissue is a group of specialised cells. Special hey!?!

There are key conditions that are required for the body to continue to function correctly - this correct functioning is called 'homeostasis'.

We will be studying how homeostasis is maintained by exploring 5 of our Human Body systems:

Nervous system
Digestive system
Endocrine system
Excretory system
Immune system

Assessment will be made each week as you complete set class system specific tasks, two short tests, a research task and participation in a researched discussion.

Accomplished
Can label and explain each of the 3 parts of the nervous system and the 4 lobes of the brain.
Can label and explain the parts of the brain and locate the area responsible for each of the 5 senses. Can differentiate the peripheral and central nervous systems and explain how the nervous system works.
Can explain the stimulus-response model in a real-life situation, using correct terminology (sensory nerves, motor nerves, peripheral nervous system, central nervous system) and describe the functions of anatomy of neurons.
Can explain how neurotransmitters transmit signals through the nervous system as well as summarise the inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters.
Choose a disease affecting neurotransmitters to explain. Most importantly describe the change to the homeostatic nervous system function.

Beyond Core
Accomplished
Can match five major hormones with the gland and function.
Can match the major hormones with the gland they are secreted from and their function in the human body
Can summarise the function of and the origin of the key hormones (melatonin, GH, ADH, T3&T4, Adrenaline, Insulin & Glucagon, Testosterone and Estrogen)
Can describe the interrelationships between some of the key hormones given in Core.
Can describe the long term consequences of the body experiences excessively high or low levels of a particular hormone(s).

Beyond Core: After watching the Zaption and making notes, you should be able to work out the hormones that work together. You will then need to research them to allow for enough detail to be provided in your answer.

Accomplished: Choose a hormone to research the long term effects of a low or high levels of.... as simple as that!

Feedback loops of various hormones
